Description:

SCHOOL (8 - 12 September 2003)

In the recent years there has been a great improvement in our understanding of the statistical properties of quantities passively transported in turbulent flows. An important generalization of the passive scalar problem is the inclusion in the equation of motion of an additional reactive term describing different phenomena, from combustion to chemical reactions and ozone dynamics. Also from a fundamental point of view, advection-reaction-diffusion systems display important relation with non equilibrium statistical mechanical problems and stochastic processes.

CONFERENCE (15 - 17 September 2003)

The year 2003 is the centenary of the birth of A.N. Kolmogorov. Beyond his celebrated contributions in many fields of mathematics, he gave seminal hints in the foundations of chaos, turbulence theory and complexity. The distinction among these topics is nowadays a historical fact; however, they still keep a common conceptual origin and are at the very basis of any effective approach to the study of complex systems. The aim of the conference is to provide a general view of the researches originated by the work of Kolmogorov. The fallout on many applications in computer science, chemistry and biology testifies the importance of such an approach even beyond physics.
